Never underestimate the
power of a story. I feel moved and empowered by stories I hear daily and sometimes they’re
stories that could absolutely use more institutional exposure and
validation. My interest in social justice launched with the stories of
marginalized groups that reflect those of my own family’s journey within
this country. I continue to be inspired in moving these narratives away
from the margins, through dialogue and everyday actions. It is these stories
that continue to inspire my involvement with the Cross-Cultural Center known
to familiar folks as the “Cross,” or the CCC.
Before
finding my way to the CCC, I studied Spanish Literature and Psychology as an
undergraduate student and while working at the CCC, received my Master’s
degree in Sociological Practice. As a graduate student, I looked at the
ways institutions such as family, schools, and belief systems impact
self-awareness, empowerment and identity development. Along the way, I had
the privilege of teaching sociology courses with college students.
Currently, I
oversee the Diversity Peer Education Program comprised of social
justice workshops with campus and surrounding community, organizing school
visits to the campus, and consulting with students, staff, and faculty on
programming; additionally, I provide support to the Campus Community
Centers' Graduate Community Coordinator, initiate staff and faculty
programs, and I collaborate with departments on speakers and programs.
Fun
facts: I'm the mother of two, met my partner at UCSD from whom I learned to
ski and ride a motorbike; I spent childhood years living in Illinois, the
Philippines, Hawai’i, and southern California. What I love about my job is
learning new perspectives, the feeling of empowerment in social justice
work and of empowering those around me.
